ABOUT D.I.E.T. Baghmara

District Institute of Education & Training, Baghmara, South Garo Hills District (under the Directorate of Educational Research & Training, Government of Meghalaya, Department of Education) was established in the District Headquarter Baghmara on 23rd September 2003. It became operational in the year 2005 with the appointment of a Principal In charge and six Lecturers. It was established to cater to the needs of Elementary teachers of the district for improving the quality of Elementary Education. The Institute was formally inaugurated by the Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya Dr. Mukul Sangma on 7th June 2005.

At present the institute is organizing workshops, orientation programmes, training etc. involving school teachers, NGOs and community leaders. It is also conducting regular classes for In-service as well as Pre-service teachers. Time to time it also undertakes academic monitoring of the elementary schools in the district.

Intake capacity: At present the Institute has an intake capacity of about 50 to 60 trainees though hostel facility is available to half of them only.

Physical infrastructure: At present the institute is functioning in a one storied RCC building. The building is constructed over a land which belongs to the Institute. A one storied RCC hostel building for boys is available behind the main office building. Another one storied RCC building for girls hostel is under construction and is about to be completed. Together both the hostel buildings may accommodate 25 to 30 trainees. The office building has large classrooms and chambers for the Principal and the Lecturers. It also has a well size office room.

The institute does not have a Library room or rooms for laboratory. There is no infrastructure for either library or laboratory. To accommodate library and laboratory first floor of the building need to be constructed. The institute lacks a boundary wall. This has lead to trespassing and littering of the compound by the domestic animals.

The supply of potable water and electricity to the institute is very erratic. Frequent power cuts for long duration hampers the official works as well as regular classes as this part of the state of Meghalaya experiences hot climate during most part of the year.

In spite being under staff both at teaching and non teaching category and also poor communication link in this part of the country in terms of telecommunication and surface transport. The institute has been trying its best to cope with the ever increasing demand under the able leadership of its Principal.
